Spatial Data Integration for Regulatory Authorities
I would like to address this scenario in another model. In case of regulatory authorities working in oil and gas sector and collecting information from operator; the spatial integration becomes more challenging. Companies belonging to different countries have different spatial standards and capabilities of producing a homogeneous dataset. The GIS specialist belonging to regulatory bodies needed to be very careful in preparing the integrated output.
Following are few of the challenges we face on daily basis.
- Data on Different CRS
- Use of different base maps
- Spatial and Temporal variations in the source imagery of vector dataset
- Use of different projection engines like (EPSG, Blue Marble)
- Different quality of digitization performed
- Analysis ready data vs raw data
- GPS data quality (number of satellites used/error level)
- Missing information in meta data
- Different standards on georeferencing
The situation could become more critical if the National Data Repositories (Like Petrobank or Prosource) are being populated from source dataset.
Preparing and implementing standard procedures for quality check before merging data into mater dataset could solve the problem but it will trash most of the incoming dataset.
